Termites
Termites are tiny insects similar to the size and look of ants that feed on wood. Not only are they bothersome, but they also cause billions of dollars in property damage each year. They have a uniform waist and straight antennae and are attracted to moisture.
The most common species of termites in Canada are Pacific Dampwood Termites and Western Subterranean Termites.
Pacific Dampwood Termites
Size: 8mm - 13mm.
Color: yellowish - brown.
Unique Characteristics: Dampwood Termites like to infest decaying wood with lots of moisture. Typically, they do not infest structures due to the lack of moisture, but will if that changes.
Control: Elimination of any sort of leaks within the building which could lead to wood moisture damage along with pesticide application among the foundation and perimeter of the building.
Western Subterranean Termites
Size: 6mm - 13mm long.
Color: dark brown.
Unique Characteristics: Present in the Interior of British Columbia, Subterranean termites most commonly live in the soil. Their colonies are formed in locations such as buried logs, dead roots or loose lumber and they create shelter tubes. Since they can receive moisture from the soil, they are able to attack dry wood a short distance from their nesting site. If left untreated, these Termites can cause significant and pricey damage to wooden structures.
Control: Pesticide application along the foundation and perimeter of the building.
