Stink Bugs

Size: 13 - 17mm.

Color: Brown with white markings on the abdomen.

Unique Characteristics: The species of Stink Bug considered a nuisance in BC is known as the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. A native pest of Asia, Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs have been detected in British Columbia since 2015. They hibernate within buildings during colder parts of the year and start to come out in the warmer months. The female lays about 400 eggs during the summer which go on to hatch only a few days later. They shelter mainly in trees and similar outdoor environments. Although they are not a danger to humans, they can be quite bothersome.

Control: Prevention is the best method of control. The building will need to be thoroughly inspected and any openings and possible entry points such as windows and doors will need to be sealed accordingly. The use of pesticides inside is not recommended.

Based on the Government of British Columbia’s guide , home owners can gather the bugs and drown them in a soapy water solution. Squashing the bugs will release a strong odor, so that is not encouraged.
